Competition System

  1. Preliminary phase
    • Six (6) pools of four (4) teams (in a round robin format) will be formed in the Preliminary Round, to determine 16 teams advancing to the Round of 16. Allocation of teams in each pool will be in accordance with the FIVB regulations.
      At the completion of each match during pool play, 2 points will be awarded to the winner, 1 point will be awarded to the loser, 0 points will be awarded to the forfeited team.
      The first two (2) teams of each pool (total 12 teams), plus the best two (2) of teams ranked third in their pools (total 2 teams, as per match, set and point ratio) will directly advance to the Single Elimination Phase. The other two (2) vacancies to the Round of 16 will be determined by the "Lucky Loser" matches between the remaining four (4) teams ranked third in their pools.
  2. Ranking in Pools
    • Ranking in pools will be determined by the total number of points. If a tie should occur during the team ranking process, the following processes will be followed: (From the FIVB rule book)
      In the case of a tie in the number of points gained by two or more teams, they will be classified as follows:
      During the Round Robin:
      1. Number of matches won
      2. Head to Head:
      a. Two Teams:
      i) If teams have played against each other, the winner finishes ahead.
      ii) If teams concerned have not played against each other, decided by sets ratio if a tie still exists by point's ratio and if a tie still exists then the teams have the same position in ranking.
      b. Three Teams:
      The third team is decided by sets ratio if a tie still exists by point's ratio for the matches involving those three teams; the first two teams are then decided by a head to head (2.a)
      c. Four teams:
      The fourth team is decided by a sets ratio, if a tie still exists by point's ratio for the matches involving those four teams.
      At the end of each pool:
      1. Number of matches won
      2. Head to head:
      a. Two teams: The winner finishes ahead.
      b. Three teams: The third team is decided by sets ratio if a tie still exists by point's ratio for the matches involving those three teams; the first two teams are then decided by a head to head (2.a)
  3. Single Elimination Phase-Round of 16
    • Seeding of the teams after the Preliminary Round will be in accordance with the FIVB regulations.
      The Round of 16 will be played in a single elimination format, to qualify eight (8) winning teams for the quarter-finals.
  4. Single Elimination Phase-Round of 8
    • The four (4) winners of the quarter finals will then advance to the semi-finals by single elimination format.
  5. Finals
    • Two (2) losers of the semi-finals will play the bronze medal match to determine the bronze medal and the fourth place.
      Two (2) winners of the semi-finals will play the gold medal match to determine the gold medal and silver medals
